Planting a Data Viz and a Storyboard Culture

Data Science is not about knowing the tool kit and working as a desk jobber by implementing the mundane deliverables. What makes Data Science beautiful, enthralling and the sexiest job of 21stCentury is the power of story telling and compelling visualizations that helps to emotionally connect with the audience, client or the end user by leveraging the power of data.

Data Visualization and Storytelling is a powerful subject which aims to implant the seed of empathy, visionary mindset and technical tools to propagate the power of painting a story with powerful emotional connect. The course is tailored to challenge our traditional perspectives and think beyond the mainstream to make a powerful impact the field of business, entrepreneurship or freelancing world.

After completing the course, on the technical front, one can expect to know how to make interactive ad impactful visualizations using Tableau, Matplotlib, Plotly and Geopandas. On the storyboard front, the case studies are well tailored to broaden our perspective and think beyond. During the course, in one of the classes, we were also allowed to play with a data driven dashboard simulation that helped us understand the holistic view of how tomake strategic decisions using a data driven platform. It was a fun exercise, because had it been done using traditional methodologies, majority of the people would have lost interest in doing the same exercise.

People are visual beings. We understand things easier when it is presented visually, and surprisingly, it turns out that the message delivered through beautiful visuals creates a powerful impact and longs last in our head compared to the traditional mundane paragraphs composed of texts and numbers.

It is important to plant a data visualization and a storyboard culture in all the data science organization because at the end, it is the story which people buy or fall for. From my past experience in a data science startup, I could now visualize while reminiscing that it was the lack of this culture which made the job look dull and pale. Thus, acumen in storyboarding is an automatic big plus to excel in the journey of data science. For the next batch, think of your persona when you are playing some mobile or desktop game, it’s just the engagement that is required, because in my opinion, DVS was by far the best fun subject that ever happened to me.
